Many posters from World War II illustrated the importance of conserving fuel and rubber tires by advertising car clubs and carpooling, and the use of public transportation. During the war, the United States was able to supply its petroleum needs through domestic production, so gasoline shortages were not too serious a problem. Consumers disliked the ration on gasoline, but it was necessary to conserve automobiles, trucks and tires.
