Henry Koerner, a Vienna-born painter, was best known for his portraits of celebrities such as Maria Callas and John F. Kennedy that appeared on the front of Time in the 1950s and 1960s. Koerner moved to the U.S. in 1938, starting his career as a commercial artist in Brooklyn. Through most of World War II, Koerner designed posters for the Office of War Information and the Office of Strategic Services. His poster "Someone Talked" won an award from the Museum of Modern Art. He was also sent to Germany after the victory in Europe to sketch the Nuremburg trials. After the war, Koerner traveled back to his home country and discovered that his parents and brother had died in concentration camps. He later did a series of paintings dealing with his feelings and the scenes he saw as a memorial to his family.
