"Navigating 2 Norths with Lewis & Clark"

Brass navigational instruments, maps and lesson plans provide fun hands-on studies of history, science, math, astronomy, geography and more. Use your own chronometer with a sextant, spirit level, compass and log line reel similar to what Lewis and Clark used to survey and map land and waterways for President Jefferson. Join Europeans since the sixteenth century and Americans of the nineteenth century in the race to navigate the globe for trade and settlement. Grades 3-12.

"Fort Fizzle Trunk"

Students have fun reenacting local history. Pick a character or a group to represent, don a costume, and role play using a script. Learn the tactics and blunders made by 7th Infantry Army Captain Rawn at Fort Fizzle. Discover the challenges faced by Chief Looking Glass and the Nez Perce in passing near present day Lolo, Montana. Historic replicas include an Army cap, 2 uniform shirts, cartridge belt, canteen, trowel bayonet, photographs and maps of the site. Grades 4-9. Call to reserve the trunk for a free 2-week checkout.

Lewis and Clark:  Everyday Objects and Tools

Discover what accompanied Lewis and Clark on their Corps of Discovery.  Students can handle and learn about objects such as a powder horn, jaw harp, bone-handled awl, caribou fur, and much more.  Books included.

Missoula History through Children’s Eyes

This new education history trunk will be available in November 2008 for teachers to check out, free of charge, for a 2 week period or presented by a docent.  We are calling it a “Hatbox History Kit”, because the complete trunk can be checked out, or a separate “hatbox” component can be checked out individually, depending on the classroom needs and interests.  This is an ideal option for 3rd graders studying local history.  The hands-on, interactive trunk includes the following components:

  • Introduction - Pre-settlement, 1700 - 1850

  • Children and Their Land

  • Children on the Way

  • Children at Home and in Town

  • Children at Work and Play

  • Children at School

  • Children at Church

  • Children and Art
